Makar Sankranti 2017 Images

Indians conflate this celebration with the Winter Solstice, and trust that the sun closes its southward trip (Sanskrit: Dakshinayana) at the Tropic of Capricorn, and begins moving northward (Sanskrit: Uttarayaana) towards the Tropic of Cancer, in the Indian and Nepalese Hindu month of Poush on this day in mid-January.

This is not right as logically, in the Northern Hemisphere, winter solstice happens somewhere around 21 and 22 December. Light will start to increment around this time when the Sun starts its northward trip which marks Uttarayaan.
Accordingly, any association with winter solstice is expected to Makar Sankranti being the main sun oriented celebration which happens after winter solstice which means the arrival of longer days.

The date of winter solstice changes continuously because of the Axial precession of the Earth, coming prior by around 1 day in like clockwork. Henceforth, if Makara Sankranti sooner or later of time marked the genuine date of winter solstice, a date in mid-January would compare to around 300CE, the prime of Indian arithmetic and cosmology
